Jesus tests the disciples in many ways; using situations in which the solutions seem impossible. For instance, Jesus feeds the five thousand when there was a shortage of food and I would imagine it induced a lot of panic. The disciples felt inadequate and incapable to meet the needs of the crowd. Jesus wanted them to understand that humanity’s creativity and ingenuity is not enough. We are creatures that have been designed to need something beyond ourselves—Jesus. Our souls need more than what is found on the earth.
Jesus gives us a major compliment when He tells us that only He—the Son of Man, divine being, and infinite God—can satisfy us. He is the true bread from heaven, given to us by God every single day. We are to keep coming to the table to be satisfied. As we meet at the table to take and eat the Bread of Life, we are to remember that Jesus is a gift to the world, and He is what sustains life. So, keep coming!
